After I appliqued all these fish I wanted to trim the backgrounds so that the block was 12 1/2” square...since these are set with pieced blocks. I thought the best way to do this would be to cut out a fish and center it in my 12 1/2” ruler.
That way I could put the fish pattern over the fish.
Hope that helps. When we get ready to trim our Miss Kringle blocks for the Jingle BOM I have a slick way to trim bigger blocks that I will show you!
One question I get asked frequently is whether or not I trim away the background fabric from my applique. The answer is no generally, unless the background fabric is blue. It seems that blue backgrounds show through applique like a beacon light. So here is my fish and it’s backside...all carefully trimmed. Thought you would want to know.
Several years ago I was at a rummage sale and I found this lovely old cigar box. As I got into quilting it became my sewing box. I even stitched a felt lining for it. Alas, it is a little small for all my stuff right now...and a tad fragile. So, I started searching around for something like it. I discovered Claud’s Unique Products on Etsy a few weeks back and on a whim I ordered a lap desk. As you might have guessed, I do a ton of drawing and wanted a place for all my pens and sketchbooks that doubled as a work surface. It is gorgeous as you can see.
The shop owner, Les, makes all these desks himself. I started corresponding with him and it turns out his wife and her family are avid quilters. So, when I asked if he could make one more like a sewing box, he pretty much knew exactly what I wanted. I ordered one. I can hardly wait. I will post pictures when it comes. In the mean time, be sure to check out his shop at:
I am beginning to realize that as far as blogging goes, if I don’t do it on the weekend, it won’t happen during the week. Luckily, I love to sew and blog on the weekends. This weekend I made a big push and am really close to done with the downloads for the last Jingle Blocks. I wanted everyone to have everything by October and I think that will happen. the above shot is all the done blocks. Here is my desk at the moment.
I hope to have Pieced Block 6 this friday. Next week we will have Applique AND Pieced Block 7. The week after that Applique AND Pieced Block 8. If I am not dead, I will get the finishing directions done sometime after that.
Be sure to check out Judy’s blog for some Monday morning inspiration.
I almost forgot about this! We have a feature at McCall's Quilting called Block Builders Workshop. Each video is accompanied by a block design in the magazine. Here I am making my Daisy Wreath Block using my perfect petal technique!
The pattern for the block can be found in the September/October 2013 issue of McCall's Quilting.
Here is a little more of a sneak peak of what I have planned for next year. The basket block is the starting point and every month I am going to fill it with a fresh bouquet of flowers made with these fabric (or something pretty darn close).
This will be a BOM where you purchase it block by block. That way you only get the blocks you want. There will be 9 total blocks and an applique border around the whole thing. I'm super excited to get going with this but for right now I want to finish Jingle.
Speaking of Jingle, I hope to have the next pieced block up for you this week. We are having some unexpected health issues in my family right now so it may be next week.
Be sure to check out Judy's blog for more Monday morning inspiration!
We wraped up the video taping of McCall's Quilting Quilt ALong 3 last week. In this series you will get in depth free directions and video for how to make this little quilt, Fancy Flowers. This series will be live in November but never fear, I will announce it here. I am super happy with how this went. It will be so exciting to see all the applique techniques I have shown you here in professional quality video.
Here is a shot of Valerie and I and the crew.
And here I am with my new love, the Handi Quilter Sweet 16.
I will be back next week with Jingle Pieced Block 6. For those of you that are having trouble finding patterns. Look in the category section, under Jingle BOM. I sometimes forget to put a category on the post and I hope I have updates this correctly but if not, you can alwaays use the search feature on this blog.
