This past summer I was part of an online class called Unravelling. The instructor and one of the participants recommended a book called Style Statement. I’ve been thinking a bit lately about figuring out what my “style” is (see last post) so I went ahead and got the book. Now, I’m not exactly into style per say, as a matter of fact I am the least stylish person I know, so this was an odd purchase for me. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The “Style Statement” the authors have you work on isn’t just about your clothes or your home decorating but more about what drives your decision making in these and many other areas. Your “Style Statement” is made up of two words. The first word is your inner foundation word, they call it your 80%. Your second is your creative edge, your 20%. The metaphor I like for this is a cupcake. Your inner foundation is the type of cake you are. Your creative edge is, of course, the frosting. The book has loads of quizzes and examples that help you get to what your two words are. It was actually very fun and revealing.
So, what did my Style Statement turn out to be?
Simple Whimsy
The simple part was easy because I really do like things very simple. Everything from my house to my wardrobe is very pared down.
The whimsy part, I think, expresses my sense of humor. I’m basically a happy person and I love to have lightness and humor in my life and my art.
To me, my last quilt expresses Simple Whimsy in all aspects. It’s on a nice white background. The colors are bright and clear. The quilting done by Karen Dovala is very beautiful but not flashy. And, the design is whimsical.
Susannah Conway, leader of the Unravelling course, wrote a very nice review of this book that you can find here.(You might need to scroll down a bit)
