Happy Monday Everyone and Happy Halloween!
Here is a shot of my Halloween Design Wall. I haven’t finished all the embroidery on my Callavera (Day of the Dead skull) so this will be a project for next year’s Halloween.

Well, I started out the week with high hopes of having a free project for you today. A very Halloween project that started like this.
But I got a little sick, got a little behind at work and yesterday I woke up to this.
Then, when it was homework time...
Well, let's just say that this was how my son did his homework last night.
This morning when I went to take the aforementioned son to school my car doors were frozen shut...um...because it was 16 degrees Farenheit outside...yeah winter!
Except it's October!
Luckily for me, Halloween isn't until Monday.....have a nice weekend.
I have been working up the courage to try a little embroidery on one of my quilts and I thought what better place to start then stems. Since I am not exactly sure where all the leaves and flowers arre going to go I thought I would arrange and baste everything down before I decided where to mark the stems. After I get those all appliqued down I will embroider stems.
Hope this works out....
So remember when I said that I was so busy over the weekend that I could hardly breathe? Yeah, me too. It turns out that I have a little cold and cough going here. I am always so surprised when I get sick. Thankfully it’s rare. Here is a shot of my design table this Wednesday. I’m going to try something new with this basket so I’m playing with the layout right now.

Have you ever wondered what to do with those super wonderful little fabric scraps that you just CANNOT throw away? Basicgrey has come up with a really neat idea for tuning them into art! I've seen several of these in web-land lately and I have two to give away to a lucky blog reader. Along with these yummy sampler frames I also have 4 packs of Basicgrey buttons to go with them.

I’ve made a little progress on my fall basket quilt and I wanted to share these steps with you.
I appliquéd the woven basket stems, handle and bottom first.
Then I added my pumpkin and appliquéd it down.
Finally I added the basket top.
These baskets can get a little bulky so I wanted to make sure everything was nicely secured before adding all those flowers and leaves.
For my new fall basket quilt I thought I would re-visit the basket I made in the spring (shown above). For this new basket I wanted to add some decorative fabric to the woven basket to make it more “fall-ish” . If you missed the basket weaving tutorials from the spring you can find them here.
To start with I pinned my vertical basket bars. It turns out that this works much better if you have an odd number of bars ( I had to add one at the end)
Then I wove a few horizontal bars in.
I made an extra wide (1/2") bias bar of this cute plaid to weave next.
Here it is all woven and glued and waiting for pumpkins.
If you are a quilter that has lived anywhere in the Colorado Front Range in the past ten years you have probably seen or heard about “THE COLOR CLASS” taught by my friend Heather Thomas.
Heather is one of the most innovative and passionate artists I know and she developed a yearlong class that covers classical color theory with a healthy helping of design thrown in for good measure. Each class she introduces a new color concept and the “homework” is to create a quilt or other piece of art using that concept. By the time you are done you have made 12 quilts/projects and your have learned tons of stuff about color and design. The whole time I was taking this class I kept yearning for a book. Well, I think enough of us begged her so she has finally written one and it is really really great. If you have always wanted to know more about color and want an in depth book written primarily for quilters and fiber artists then this is the one for you. Each chapter not only has the information on a particular color concept but TONS of gorgeous photographs that illustrate her point. It’s going to be a classic reference I am sure.
