Large Wavy Flower

I guess every designer has certain go to design elements that they use in certain situations. When I am dealing with a design that has a LOT of radial symmetry I tend to go with one of my favorite motif’s…the large wavy flower. The BOM for 2012 has just such a flowers in it’s center block. Here’s a bit of a sneak peak.

I found that this deep periwinkle blue that I am using shows through everything!  And this blocks is going to 24” x 24”. To solve the shadowing problem and the sewing in the middle of a big block problem I decided to get a little head start on my large wavy flower before I basted it to the center.

This also made it easy to cut the blue away from the back and eliminate shadowing by the pesky, yet lovely periwinkle blue.

Having a Green Swoon

I’m having a bit of a green swoon here…a good kind of swoon, but a swoon none the less. I am very partial to the way Nancy Halvorsen’s does green. Her line of fabric, Forever Spring, has some super yummy greens in it…turns out they are just perfect for my 2012 BOM…stay tuned..

Design Wall Monday

Happy Monday friends! I hope all my stateside readers had a lovely holiday weekend. I had loads of fun with my family and friends. Let's just say, pie was involved. Here is a shot of my design wall/ table this Monday morning. Don't you just love to see paper plates with heaps of fabric flowers on them. OK, maybe that's just me...anyway, this is the begining of next years Block of the Month. I will have lots of info on these this the next couple of weeks so stay tuned. Now, off to press more leaves.

Appliquéd Sawtooth Borders

A while back I was in one of my favorite quilt shops when I found this intriguing template. Since I am always looking for ways to appliqué stuff I bought it and I thought Miss Amy would be the perfect place to try it out.

First I made sure that the background was cut so that I could get the right number of sawteeth in the border. Then I traced the template onto the wrong side of the center appliqué. In retrospect, I found I needed to see this line from the front so I went back over my tracing with a blue pen (the one the disappears when you get it wet)

Next I pinned my border fabric strip to the front of the appliqué. Then from the back I basted along the drawn line (sorry forgot to get that shot). I also basted along the edge too.

After all that basting was done I trimmed the excess fabric.

And started turning and stitching to finish the border.

This whole process took about as much time as piecing so I’m torn as to whether I like it or not. I think it will depend on my mood and what type of border I am doing.

Now I am off to do my Thanksgiving shopping. This year we are doing a gluten free meal since my niece can’t have any gluten. It’s going to be a challenge finding pie stuff but luckily I live in a mecca for people with weird diets so I think I will have success.

Beyond Excited Design Wall

I know it doesn’t look like much but I had a visit from the quilt design fairy over the weekend and made HUGE progress in the 2012 BOM Design…so expect more announcements on that in the next few weeks. I don’t know if you guys are burnt out on these BOM’s but I love them and I am very excited to get started on this one.

For those of us who live In the US this is a big week for cooking and family and of course…eating pie. I hope everyone who travels has a safe journey. Be sure to check in this week for a new way to do sawtooth borders.

Also, for the Block 11 downloads...Part 4 really is part 4 not part 3...I just kinda forgot to change my label.

As promised here is block 11 of the 2011 Block of the Month My Tweets...gosh I can't really believe we are almost done with this!

Since these blocks finish at 14” and many of the blocks are asymmetrical I want to talk about printing your patterns. Each pattern has four downloads. Print each of these and tape them together to make your full sized pattern. Here is a diagram for doing this.

We will do this the same way for all the patterns since it allows the patterns to be easily printed on a home printer.

The Winner Is...

Raewyn, who likes apple pie with berries thrown in...yum!

My favorite pie is Bavarian Cream if I need a cold pie. My sister in law has such an amazing recipe for this and it is commonly referred to as THE PIE..as in:

"What can I bring for dinner"

"THE PIE"

My guilty little secret pie is Marie Calendar's Razzelberry pie with vanilla ice cream. When I was a kid we lived down the street from one of the original Marie Calendar's and this was my absolute favorite thing, especially right out of the oven.

Design Wall Monday

Here is a shot of my design wall/table this Monday. This is the beginings of Block 11 for My Tweets which I will (hopefully) have up on Friday. It's hard to imagine that the blocks are almost done!So things will be a tad quiet this week while I stitch, scan and upload this block.
