Glorious Autumn Block Party

Here is my offering for the Glorious Autumn Block Party. I’m calling this little block Leaves and Berries. I know these aren’t my normal colors but I sure did love stitching this block. I used my standard appliqué technique to make this block but it is easy to do with all types of appliqué. You can download the pattern here:

I have so much to be thankful for that I cannot even think of the right words. So I will just show you instead. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Mimi’s Bloomers Block 11…tips

OK, so I don’t have Block 11 totally done yet. As I was getting it together I decided to do this tutorial to show you how to get the center part all basted.

First, it is worth making a full sized pattern for this one so I drew mine out (when the pattern comes on Friday you guys can just print 4 copies and tape it together).

Here I have pinned my background square on top of the pattern and I have it on top of my light box. If you don’t have a light box, don’t worry a window works just fine.

The center bit is pink and I wanted to put that down first. It’s a 4” circle which I cut out, folded in half twice and put on my background, aligning the folds.

I then glued it in place and basted it down.

Next, you want to put it back onto the pattern so these heart petals get lined up.

Carefully place each heart/petal so that the place where they aren’t touching is symmetric.

Keep going and re-adjusting until the center part looks even and symmetric.

OK I hope that wasn’t too much of a tease for you. I will be back on Friday with the real pattern. Just consider it my antidote to Black Friday.

RIP Hostess

Last Friday we were all busily working away when we heard a yelp coming from my co-worker Tracee’s office. She had just gotten the news that Hostess was going out of business. We decided that we needed to mark this occasion with a mini memorial service so another co-worker and I ran over to Target so gather up any Hostess products we could find. It was a little sad, I remember my mother packing Ding-Dongs in my lunch when I was a kid.

We all had cupcakes and chocolate filled Twinkies (they were out of regular Twinkies) and shared our Hostess memories. My favorite thing was dunking Twinkies in liquid Nitrogen (freezes them instantly) and throwing them off the tops of buildings to see then shatter. What can I say, I was a science nerd in college.

The saddest part was that they just didn’t taste as good as I remember them tasting…

Design Wall Monday…I can breathe

Well, I finally went to the doctor last week and guess what? I had a sinus infection. Now I have medicine and believe you me, life is much easier when you can breathe. So much easier in fact that I was very productive in the quilting department this past weekend. Here’s a sneak peak:

Still Recovering Here

Hello everyone. I don’t know what bug I picked up in Houston but it is sure a persistent bug. I am still coughing and blowing my nose all the time, luckily I feel better. If I am still blowing my nose this much by mid-week I am packing myself off to the doctor.

I wanted to show you a few more things that I loved in Houston. First there was this quilt by Karen Kay Buckley and Renae Haddadin, Fiesta Mexico. (Good news, you can buy this pattern here)

Karen’s appliqué and Renae’s quilting are exquisite

This lovely quilt by Pat Holly also caught my eye. The detail was just amazing.

Now I am going to go blow my nose some more. I will be back next week with Block 11 of Mimi’s Bloomers. We are almost done…

ElaTED is by Ted Storm, is completely hand appliquéd and hand quilted AND it won the Founder’s Award. It was amazing!!!

This one is by Deborah Kemball and is also hand appliquéd and hand quilted….swoon.

I think I need to take up hand quilting. More next week.
