Last Friday we were all busily working away when we heard a yelp coming from my co-worker Tracee’s office. She had just gotten the news that Hostess was going out of business. We decided that we needed to mark this occasion with a mini memorial service so another co-worker and I ran over to Target so gather up any Hostess products we could find. It was a little sad, I remember my mother packing Ding-Dongs in my lunch when I was a kid.
We all had cupcakes and chocolate filled Twinkies (they were out of regular Twinkies) and shared our Hostess memories. My favorite thing was dunking Twinkies in liquid Nitrogen (freezes them instantly) and throwing them off the tops of buildings to see then shatter. What can I say, I was a science nerd in college.
The saddest part was that they just didn’t taste as good as I remember them tasting…
No, they do not taste as good as when I was a kid. They are way too sweet for me now. And probably have too many preservatives for any of us to be consuming. Just wait, the fate of Hostess is not yet decided. Those Twinkies will outlast all of us.

There's no doubt in my mind that the recipe has been changed over the years, and that's why they don't taste as good as they once did.

I remember lunch box twinkies, too! Except I had a brown paper bag with a PB&J sandwich, a banged-up, bruised apple, and a few coins for buying a carton of milk in the cafeteria.
My guess is that the recipe is the same as always, but our tastes have changed -- there was a time when I thought Chef Boyardee raviolis were the most delicious food on earth besides Kraft Mac 'n' Cheese with sliced hot dogs -- and that was around the same time that I was a Twinkie conoisseur!
I think I'm going to have to look for Twinkies the next time I'm at the store, so we can have our own memorial service for them at my house. Maybe we'll light candles and sing a hymn. ;-)

The closing of Hostess hit our news here in the UK so it must be major! I've heard though that Twinkies will still be made in Canada if anyone need a fix :o)

I loved ding donned and ho-hos, never liked twinkies. Those were my brothers favorites. I hear there are a few companies looking to buy hostess, so maybe the world can still have twinkies.
