I have a quote from him on this subject on my computer desktop, and I try to read it regularly, every time I get bogged down. It's great advice for all creative people! Thanks for sharing, Erin!
About 4 years ago I joined OPAM (One Project A Month) where I promised myself to complete at least one project a month and post it on my blog. This has helped me keep going even when I didn't feel like being creative and at the end of each year I am so happy that I have not only kept going but have had some seriously great accomplishments.
I love this because I have been quilting for about 8 years, I follow patterns and am slowly gaining confidence about colour, plus picking up a little speed on my sewing machine. I KNOW my work is unoriginal and not very exciting to professionals but I also know that the longer I go at it the better I will get and maybe one day I will create something original or truly excellent. Meanwhile I love everything I do and make (that took a while) and I can work and wait - God willing of course!!
That was such an interesting video. I've been quilting for only for only four or five years and I consider this time to have been a learning time. But I can see that not only are my skills improving, I am becoming more creative. And this process has definitely taken time. The skill development has taken time, but also the understanding of what works and what doesn't work, and what I like and what I don't like, has taken time. I guess that just the fact that I have spent so much time committed to this endeavor of quilting means that I really want to get very good at it and that I want to be more creative. (I hope that made sense).
This was a very, very interesting video. Thank you for sharing it.
I saw this written before from Ira Glass but not on video. Good reminder.
