Quilting...next steps

Now that I have everything basted and stitched in the ditch, it's time to start filling the background with a filler pattern. My go to filler is a paisley. I find it easy to do and it makes my appliques pop. I start at the center and work outwards. It can be a little fiddly going in and out of the applique shapes so I take my time.

Here is a shot of the vine I want to have for my feathers in the setting triangles. I am not too sure how I want to do my feathers so I am practicing with a pencil first.

Getting Ready to Quilt

For the next few posts I am going to share a little bit of how I go about quilting one of my smaller projects. I absolutely HATE safety pinning quilts so imagine how delighted I was when I saw this short video of how Sharon Schamber bastes quilts. It's so easy! No crawling around on the floor getting a backache!

 

After I get my quilt all basted I pick thread. For this quilt I am using 3 colors.

Then I make sure my sewing machine is all clean and has a new needle. I always match my bobbin thread to my top thread so I get these all ready too.The first thing I do is use my walking foot to stitch in the ditch around the center block, inner border and setting triangles. I also stitch around the outer edge. For this quilt I want to have feathers in the setting triangles so I stitched the vine my feathers are going to attach to with my walking foot as well.

Design Wall Monday

This week I did a little playing with some Kaffe Fassett fabric. I have always wanted to do a Joseph's Coat quilt but have been looking for a way to make this pattern a little differently. So here is the start of a REVERSE Joseph's Coat quilt. Also, an upcoming project (wink wink).
