This block contains my newest applique crush, baby Dresden Plates. They are so fun to make that I’m always looking for ways to add them to my applique designs.
They really aren’t as fussy as they look. Here are some quick tips to help you make your own version.
Cut strips of fabric in the desired size. You can make your own templates from your chosen pattern or use a pre-made template. I really like this little template from Suzn Quilts (suznquilts.com). I pick 4 different yellow fabrics for mine. I cut 3 wedges from each.
Fold your wedge in half lengthwise and right sides together like this.
Sew, starting with the folded edge.
Trim your seam allowance on an angle like this. This will reduce the bulk at the point.
This part is a bit fussy and can easily be ignored: I like to press my seams open before I turn the point right side out. I find this makes my point sharper. One thing you can do to help with this is use the Prairie Pointer from Susan Cleveland (piecesbewithyou.com).
After I open the seam allowance I turn the sewn wedge right side out using the Prairie Pointer again.
Once all your wedges are prepared just sew them together and add a center. Not only are these fun to make they are a breeze to applique. The edges are already turned!
