Hello All,
In the past few weeks my social media feeds have been filled with people sewing masks to help our healthcare workers. I think it's a good idea to check in with your local hospitals before you start however. This weekend our local hospital did post that they would accept home-sewn masks but had some requirements about the construction. I'm currently scouring the house for materials.

Hello Applique Addicts! I hope everyone is safe and healthy.
This week's Workshop Wednesday is just a short note on how I am doing the stems for the small Home Again blocks. Since these block only finish at 7" I thought embroidery would be the way to go. For those of you who are making the version with 9" blocks I think this would work too. I am using the chain stitch for my stems for a particular reason...I am TERRIBLE at stem stitch, really truly AWFUL. There you have it.

Since we are all being good citizens and practicing Sewcial Distancing, I thought I would start posting the Home Again blocks weekly. Hopefully that will make staying home a bit more palatable!
Here is a shot of my design wall today. All the blocks are done...I just need to get them turned into patterns and we're off!

Like most of you I could fabric shop ALL DAY. At first, I am drawn to the pretty multicolored prints. I usually buy some, bring it home and then spend the next 10 years trying to figure out how to use it. In the last few years I have started looking fabric in a different way though. In addition to the color I also look for interesting patterns that would compliment my designs. The top photo is a perfect example! I found those green radiating patterns would be fun to use in some of the Home Again blocks…they add so much visual interest!
Another thing I like to look for are spirals and circles. These make great flower centers.
Here's another couple of examples I found. I used the one on the left to make a simple flower a little more complex.
Sometimes bigger circles can be jazzed up with something like this.
You can even combine them in interesting ways. Seriously…the possibilities!
Here are some of the ways I used that green fabric in the BOM. Yes, those are some sneak peaks. Enjoy!

There will be a new Home Again block on Friday to keep us all busy.
I recently rejoined The Quilt Show because I was SMITTEN by their 2020 BOM. I've always loved Sue Garman's quilts and this one looked like a great way to teach myself some new ways to applique. Also, I needed a new quilt for my bed. It's fun to catch up on all the latest quilting while "social distancing"...which I hope you are all doing. Washing hands is not a problem for me since I'm a tad obsessive about that anyway.
So far I've found that my normal method works well for some blocks. For those papercut style blocks I'm using Kay Mackenzie's back basting method. It works really well once you practice a bit!

I have been working on and off for the last year on what I fondly call my "Farm to Table" project. Mostly I just love vegetables and was thinking of how I could make an applique vegetable quilt.
I also want to try using Cherrywood fabrics for applique. These fabrics are an absolute dream to work with!
Here's a beet. Who can resist that color!
And a squash. This one isn't completely quilted yet but it was fun to make...Mmmmmmm!
One technique I find really helpful when I am designing and stitching an applique block is to pre-assemble my shapes beforehand. As you can see, I have a few leftover applique shapes. This usually happens when I am designing and I make a change. I always save these shapes because you just never know when you might need a spare flower…or maybe they will spur a whole new design...or maybe I'm just a hoarder!
Anyway, here I am applying glue to the back of a flower center. You might need to use the pattern piece as a guide for more complicated flowers and such.
Then stick the petal on.
And repeat.
Here, I have flipped the flower over to add the tiny circle at the center.
And there you have it, a pretty little flower.
